PART 1 · LESSON 7 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
The Vaccination Day
In the mountain village of San Miguel, the clinic team vaccinates a hundred and twelve children in one day, with Elena's tamales for lunch and Doctor Ruiz at the wheel. Say how long you've been doing something - I've been working here for three weeks - ask how long someone has been somewhere, and calm a frightened child.

THE STORY
It's Wednesday, the twenty-eighth of January. San Miguel is two hours up a mountain road from Oaxaca, and by eight in the morning there's a long line of mothers and children outside the village school, where the clinic team has set up two tables, a cooler full of vaccines and a box of lollipops. At two they eat Elena's tamales in the school yard, and at six Doctor Ruiz drives everyone back down the mountain. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
