A Year On

Saturday the twenty-ninth of July, the Sumida river fireworks, a year on. Sota has been on the blue sheet since seven, because Kenta made him; Mio comes, as she said she would; Kenta brings Natsuki, because Grandma said so; Daichi brings far too much beer; and this year Mike is in a yukata too, because Aya put him in it. When Daichi asks, at the top of his voice, whether Natsuki is Kenta's girlfriend, Kenta says it's not like that, and Natsuki agrees, politely. Learn the Japanese friends really speak, see, I told you (hora, itta jan), here we are again (mata kichatta ne), questions with the little words dropped (Natsuki-san, kanojo?), and it's not like that (sonna n ja nai yo).

L’HISTOIRE

Saturday, the twenty-ninth of July, twenty twenty-eight. Five in the afternoon, the bank of the Sumida river near Asakusa, where nearly a million people are gathering again for the fireworks. A year ago Kenta saved the spot and Sota asked Mio to come again next year. This year Sota has been on the blue sheet since seven, because Kenta told him to, and Mio is on her way. At six Kenta arrives with Natsuki and Missus Sato's rice balls, Daichi is at the next sheet with a box of beer, and at half past six Mike and Aya come up from the station in yukata. At seven the first firework goes up, and Daichi asks a question. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
