When He Was Little

After lunch, Martine brings out the photo album, Hugo at three with his blond hair, Hugo at eight on his father's little fishing boat, and the Sunday he leaned over to see a fish and fell in. THE STORY
Saturday the twenty-fifth of December, three in the afternoon, in the flat above the Old Port. Christmas lunch is over, the thirteen desserts are still on the table, and Martine comes back from the bedroom with a big red photo album under her arm. Hugo knows what's coming. Hugo at three, Hugo at eight on his father's little fishing boat, and the Sunday he leaned over to see a fish. Every family has that story, and today Emma hears Hugo's.
