PART 3 · LESSON 24 OF 30 · 32 MINUTES
Welcome to Marseille!
Thursday the twenty-third of December, the fast train south. Emma has butterflies, the sea appears at the window, and at the bottom of the great stairs of Saint-Charles station, Hugo's parents are waiting. Martine uses the friendly you at once, Gerard has no accent at all, and in the flat above the Old Port the church on the hill fills the window. Say I've got butterflies, I'm so pleased you came, ask if you can use the friendly you, and say I told you so.

THE STORY
Thursday the twenty-third of December, a quarter to two in the afternoon. The fast train from Lyon has been running south for over an hour, and in Emma's bag are the presents from the Croix-Rousse market, the blue silk scarf, the Lyon sausage and the papillotes. In twenty minutes, Marseille. Saint-Charles station stands on a hill above the city, with a great stone staircase down to the street, and at the bottom of it a small woman in a red coat is waving with both arms. Then the flat above the Old Port, the church on the hill in the window, and the question Emma has carried since Lyon, the friendly you or the polite one. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
