PART 3 · LESSON 27 OF 30 · 31 MINUTES
It Shows
Sunday the twenty-sixth of December, in Marseille. Nico is off duty, and he drives Hugo and Emma to the white rocks and blue inlets south of the city, where the two brothers grew up falling out of their father's boat. While Emma goes down to touch the water, the brothers sit on a rock and talk the way brothers do. Say when we were little, Dad used to bring us here, say you're the one who fell, say it shows, say I'm glad you're happy, and ask what are you waiting for.

THE STORY
Sunday the twenty-sixth of December, eleven in the morning. Nico, straight off twenty-four hours at the fire station, has driven Hugo and Emma over the hill south of Marseille, and a stony path goes down between white rocks to a little inlet, the sea below so blue it hurts the eyes. This is where Gerard used to bring his boys by boat. Emma goes down to touch the water, and the two brothers sit on a rock above her. What they say there, she doesn't hear. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
