PART 2 · LESSON 19 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES

It Smells of Orange Blossom

Monday, April 3rd. On Encarna's first walk since the hospital, down Pureza Street, past Saint Anne's, where she married in 1970, and on to a bench by the river, the whole of Triana smells of orange blossom and of the week that's coming. Say it smells of, it sounds like, it tastes of, it reminds me of, I feel young, and tell a love story from 1970.

THE STORY

It's Monday, April 3rd, eight in the evening. Encarna is allowed out for her first walk since the hospital, a short one, slowly, on Julian's arm. Every street in Triana has orange trees, and every orange tree is in flower. Somewhere nearby, a band is playing. Halfway down Pureza Street they stop outside Saint Anne's, where Encarna got married, and by the river she needs a bench. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
