PART 1 · LESSON 7 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
Aunt Fumiko
On the third of January, the relatives come to the Yamamotos' house in Kyoto, and first and loudest is Yui's aunt Fumiko, from Osaka. She talks fast, in Osaka words, and asks Ben everything, his pay included. Then, over the New Year soup, she asks when the baby's coming. Learn to explain and excuse yourself politely with n desu (we've only just got married, you see), to turn something down softly by stopping at chotto, and to hear Osaka's honma and akan.

THE STORY
Monday, January the third, twenty twenty-eight, the Yamamotos' house in Kyoto. The relatives come for New Year, and first and loudest is Yui's aunt Fumiko, her mother's younger sister from Osaka. Over lunch she asks Ben why he stayed in Japan, how much he earns, and when the baby's coming. Yui changes the subject, and Yui's mother apologises for her sister. At five, Fumiko is pouring the sake. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
