PART 3 · LESSON 24 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
I'd Barely Lain Down
The end of June, a month after the scan. The sickness has gone, the hunger has started, and on the night of Dona Marta's June party, Bia's craving comes at three in the morning. Say "I'd barely lain down", "she hardly sleeps" and "no sooner had I sat down", talk about cravings, knock on a neighbour's door in the middle of the night, and hear Dona Marta find out at last.

THE STORY
Saturday the twenty-third of June, the night of Saint John. Downstairs, Dona Marta had a June party for the building, with paper flags, a small bonfire in the courtyard, and far too much food. It ended at midnight. Now it's three in the morning, and Bia is wide awake, staring at the ceiling, thinking about corn. Ten minutes later, Daniel is knocking very quietly on Dona Marta's door, one floor down. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
