PART 2 · LESSON 17 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
Bigger and Bigger
The new pipe leaks, and the neighbour downstairs rings the bell at last. Say "as the day goes by" and "bigger and bigger", "less and less", apologise properly for the trouble, offer to pay, and make peace with a cornmeal cake. Then, one floor down, meet Dona Marta and hear her story.

THE STORY
Saturday the twenty-fourth of March, at the door of the flat in Botafogo. The white tiles came on Monday, as promised, and the new sink went in on Friday. Bia has brought a tin with something she baked last night. The doorbell rings. On the mat stands a small woman of seventy, with grey hair in a bun, reading glasses on a chain, and a face like thunder. She lives on the seventh floor, right underneath them. Then, one floor down, the stain on her kitchen ceiling. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
