PARTIE 2 · LEÇON 16 SUR 30 · 40 MINUTES
Then There's No Wedding
Friday, March 24th. Julian calls the civil registry in Oaxaca to ask what a Mexican needs to marry a foreigner, and the list keeps getting longer - a birth certificate with an apostille, a certified translation, a certificate that she's single, blood tests and four witnesses. Then Encarna offers to be the fourth witness, and she has never had a passport. Ask what papers are needed, say a month in advance and before I change my mind, and survive the paperwork in two countries.

L’HISTOIRE
It's Friday, March 24th, ten at night in Seville and three in the afternoon in Oaxaca. Julian is on the phone to the civil registry in Oaxaca, with a pen and the back of an envelope. Sarah is next to him, reading the list upside down as it gets longer. When he hangs up, they need four witnesses, and Encarna, who has heard everything through the kitchen window, is standing at the door. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
