The Day After
The morning after the wedding, Julian's village wakes up to a second party with yesterday's leftovers, and Encarna, who hasn't slept, says something nobody expected. That afternoon in Oaxaca, Sarah finally sees the old register of births. L’HISTOIRE
It's Tuesday, December 19th, 2028, ten in the morning, in the courtyard of Julian's family's house in Teotitlan. Nobody has slept much. The long tables from last night are still in the field, and Julian's mother is heating up enormous pots of yesterday's mole. Encarna is sitting on a little chair by the loom, still in her best earrings, with a cup of Oaxacan chocolate. That afternoon, back in Oaxaca, the hotel manager at the old convent shows Sarah, Julian and Professor Ortega the register of births she has kept safe since October. They will all spend Christmas in Oaxaca, and the friends from Seville fly home together in January, in time for the Three Kings. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
