PART 1 · LESSON 6 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES

The First Email

Tuesday the seventeenth of October, twenty twenty-eight, ten in the morning, Ben's desk on the seventh floor. His first job as a leader, eight travellers from Canada for two nights in December, a small inn by the Kamo river in Kyoto, and his first business email, said aloud to Miss Nishimura before he types a word. She changes three words, and OK is never OK. At two the inn phones back, because emails are cold, in Kyoto's own Japanese with its own respect ending, and says yes, if the guests are quiet. Learn the shape of a business email (juunigatsu no dantai tsuaa no ken de gozaimasu; nihaku, oheya ga aru ka, gokakunin itadakemasu deshou ka; oisogashii tokoro, osoreirimasu ga; hikitsuzuki, yoroshiku onegai itashimasu), the condition of a yes (okyakusama ga shizuka nara), a yes with conditions (jouken tsuki no, hai desu ne), and how to hear Kyoto's politeness without saying it. The sixth lesson of Advanced Level 1.

THE STORY

Tuesday, the seventeenth of October, twenty twenty-eight. Ten in the morning, Ben's desk on the seventh floor of Tsubame Travel's head office in Osaka. On the desk, a sheet from Mister Okada, eight travellers from Toronto for two nights in Kyoto in December, and a screen with nothing on it yet. Miss Nishimura pulls up a chair. At two the phone rings, from a small inn by the Kamo river. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
