Thursday the nineteenth of June, twenty thirty-one, two in the afternoon, the kitchen in Botafogo. Alice's mother is in Sao Paulo, the daycare closed early for a teachers' meeting, and Daniel takes Gilmar's video call with Alice, eighteen months, on his lap, and Edson and Larissa on from the office by the river. Gilmar has had the proposal for three weeks and answers it with a counter, Daniel holds the deadline with the sentence a written proposal uses for otherwise, and in the middle of it Alice says two words together, for the first time, to the laptop.
