PART 2 · LESSON 15 OF 30 · 32 MINUTES

Otherwise, We Can't Keep the Deadline

Thursday the nineteenth of June, twenty thirty-one, two in the afternoon, the kitchen in Botafogo. Alice's mother is in Sao Paulo, the daycare closed early for a teachers' meeting, and Daniel takes Gilmar's video call with Alice, eighteen months, on his lap, and Edson and Larissa on from the office by the river. Gilmar has had the proposal for three weeks and answers it with a counter, Daniel holds the deadline with the sentence a written proposal uses for otherwise, and in the middle of it Alice says two words together, for the first time, to the laptop. Say "the daycare closed early, a teachers' meeting", "the discount is too small", "the deadline starts when you sign", "otherwise, we won't be able to keep the deadline", "the girl was born negotiating" and "my daughter's first sentence, and I'm in Sao Paulo".

THE STORY

Thursday the nineteenth of June, twenty thirty-one, two in the afternoon, the kitchen in Botafogo. The daycare closed at noon for a teachers' meeting, so Alice, eighteen months, is on her father's lap at the kitchen table, and the laptop holds three windows, Gilmar in the South with his thermos, Edson and Larissa in the office by the river. His wife is in Sao Paulo until Friday. Gilmar has had the proposal since the thirtieth of May, and today he answers it. Nine at night, the same table, his wife on video from the hotel, and a recording. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
