PART 1 · LESSON 4 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES

I Missed Her First Steps

Tuesday the fourteenth of January, twenty thirty-one, eleven in the morning, the kitchen in Botafogo, Daniel's second week away. The night before, on video, Alice's mother said she was about to walk. Now she is at the kitchen table with her headphones on, and Alice lets go of the sofa and walks three steps to Pipoca, who doesn't move. Five minutes later Daniel watches it in the office by the river, with Edson behind him, and watches it again. Grandma Nena says what she always says, Dona Marta hears the news through her ceiling, and that night Daniel says he missed it, and his wife tells him what he did instead. Say "she's about to walk", "I missed her first steps" and "you didn't miss them, you saw them".

THE STORY

Tuesday the fourteenth of January, twenty thirty-one, eleven in the morning, the kitchen in Botafogo. Daniel has been in the office by the river since Monday, his second week of the year. The daycare is closed for the day, so Alice, thirteen months and ten days old, is at home, holding on to the sofa, and her mother is at the kitchen table with her headphones on, in a meeting. Pipoca is asleep at the other end of the sofa. At the birthday party, Grandma Nena said that Alice would walk when her father wasn't at home. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
