PART 1 · LESSON 1 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES Free
Her First Snow
Wednesday the twenty-fifth of December, Christmas Day, the house Daniel grew up in, near Chicago, and snow since the night before. Alice, a year and three weeks old, is at the window in the pink jumper with the reindeer, which fits at last, and her first snow is nothing like her mother's two years ago, she wants to eat it. Tom, retired for a month, has shovelled a path and practised a sentence, Emily speaks only Portuguese to her niece, and a girl with one word holds on to the sofa and will not walk. At dinner, Susan asks the question nobody has asked for three weeks. Compare people and places, "unlike her mother, she loved the snow", and say "however cold it is, we go out".

THE STORY
Wednesday the twenty-fifth of December, twenty thirty, eight in the morning, the living room of the house Daniel grew up in, in a small town near Chicago. It snowed all night. Alice, a year and three weeks old, is on her mother's hip at the window, in the pink jumper with the reindeer, and Bia is in her own reindeer jumper from two Christmases ago. Out at the front, Tom, retired since November, is shovelling a path. At ten, Daniel's sister arrives, and at six, dinner, the American way. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
