PART 3 · LESSON 27 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES
Four Generations
Friday the eleventh of October, the farm, the day before Alice's baptism. Grandma Nena unwraps a gown made by her mother and worn by three generations, and Grandpa Zecka takes Daniel to the chapel and puts the bell rope in his hand. The passive across generations, "it was made by my mother", "it was worn by me, by Rosa and by Bia", "I was baptised at a year old", and Zecka's few words, "for whoever arrives, for whoever gets married", "pull hard", and "one day, the one who'll ring it is you". Also last Sunday's election, where Bia voted with Alice on her hip and Daniel waited outside the school.

THE STORY
Friday the eleventh of October, twenty thirty, the farm, eight hours from Rio and the day before the baptism. Daniel, Bia and Alice flew in this morning, Bia's father drove them up the red dirt road, and the chapel bell rang as the car came through the gate. At two, at the kitchen table, Grandma Nena unwraps a white gown as old as she is. At five, Grandpa Zecka takes Daniel to the chapel. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
