PART 1 · LESSON 6 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
In Case You Don't Have It
The American consulate, to register Alice as an American and ask for her first passport. The clerk is from Rio, and when she hears Daniel's Portuguese, she switches. Then she asks for a paper he doesn't have, and that evening, in Chicago, Susan goes down to the basement. Say what to do in case something is missing, "in case you don't have the school records", set a rule for whoever it applies to, and say what happens "if the passport hasn't arrived by then".

THE STORY
Thursday the twenty-fourth of January, twenty thirty, half past nine, at the American consulate in the centre of Rio. Daniel and Bia have brought Alice to register her as an American citizen and ask for her first passport. The clerk at the window greets them in English, until she hears Daniel speak Portuguese. Then she asks for a paper he doesn't have. That evening, Susan calls from Chicago, and goes down to the basement. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
