PART 3 · LESSON 29 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES

Her First Word

Saturday the thirtieth of November, four days before Alice turns one. In her high chair she shakes the little bell from her godfather, the dog comes running, and she says her first word, "Pipoca". None of the four from the baptism lunch, so Grandma Nena was right and Rafael has lost to a dog. At noon, a video call to Chicago becomes the question every family with two languages has to answer, "who speaks what to her", and on Monday Aunt Cris has the daycare's rule, "each in their own language, and no mixing". The ing form that says how something happens, "she's going to grow up speaking both languages".

THE STORY

Saturday the thirtieth of November, twenty thirty, eight in the morning, the kitchen in Botafogo. Alice, eleven months old, is in her high chair with a banana. Under the chair, where the banana falls, is Pipoca. In her hand is the little bell Rafael gave her at the baptism. Daniel got home from the Northeast last night. She shakes the bell, the dog comes running, she points at him and says his name. At noon, they call Chicago. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
