PART 2 · LESSON 11 OF 30 · 31 MINUTES
We'll Consider It
Friday the first of December, twenty twenty-eight, the seventh floor, and the first lesson of Part 2. Ben's first tour has a date, eight travellers from Toronto land in ten days, and the coach to Kanazawa, in the snow season, is the one thing still unbooked. Ten o'clock, Mister Sakai of the bus company on the phone, who says we'll consider it, twice; a quarter past ten, Ben tells Miss Nishimura the coach is as good as booked, and hears that it was a no. Two o'clock, the phone again, two questions, a smaller coach at seven, and Mister Okada's verdict from the sofa. Sunday evening, Mike out of the N4 exam, and Yui at the chart, turning the office's word into a real no. Learn to hear a Japanese no that never says no (kentou itashimasu; sore wa, muzukashii ka to zonjimasu; ichido, mochikaerasete itadakimasu), the two questions you ask it (itsu made ni, ohenji o itadakemasu deshou ka; nantoka, onegai dekimasen deshou ka), how to offer what would make it possible (shichiji shuppatsu nara, kanou deshou ka), and Yui's joke (kentou shimasen). The eleventh lesson of Advanced Level 1, the first of Part 2.

Eight travellers from Toronto land at Kansai airport in ten days, and the coach that takes them to Kanazawa on the fourteenth, in the snow season, still isn't booked. Mister Sakai of the bus company is on the line. A quarter past ten, Miss Nishimura's desk. Two o'clock, the phone again, with Mister Okada on the sofa by the window. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
