PART 2 · LESSON 20 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES

You Travelled More Than You Stayed

Sunday the tenth of August, twenty thirty-one, Daniel's second Father's Day. A run on the beach at seven with Alice in the pram and Rafael, who is slower; a card from the daycare with a green hand on it, green on purpose; two fathers on video at noon, one with the longest sentence of his life, one with five days of fried eggs; and at four, the fridge, where his wife has counted the days since January, out loud, and the number is bigger than either of them thought. Luana calls from Salvador for the first time since April. The last lesson of Part Two, with a line from each of its lessons. Say "you run with a pram and still get there first", "Cris said it was on purpose", "I practised all week, and your mother corrected everything", "this year, you've travelled more than you've stayed at home", "I know, and in September it's Manaus", "I'm not fighting, I'm counting" and "I went into the sea, up to the knee".

THE STORY

Sunday the tenth of August, twenty thirty-one, seven in the morning, the beach. In Brazil, Father's Day is the second Sunday of August, and this is Daniel's second. He came home on Friday night from a week in the Northeast and flies again tomorrow at six. His Sunday run has a pram in it today, and Rafael, the godfather. At half past eight an envelope on the kitchen table, at noon two fathers on video, and at four the calendar on the fridge, counted since January. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
