PART 3 · LESSON 27 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
There's No Accounting for Taste
Elena's mole against Encarna's stew, in the patio, with Manolo as the judge and the whole building as the jury. Speak the language of food and rivalry - thirty ingredients and two days' work, it's spicy, finger-licking good, it just needs a bit of, no offence but, with all the love in the world, over my dead body, that doesn't count, a tie, there's no accounting for taste - and hear Spain and Mexico at the same table.

THE STORY
It's Monday, June 18th, 2029, two in the afternoon, in Encarna's patio, two days before the wedding. Elena brought her mole from Oaxaca as a paste, in jars, and since Sunday she has taken over Sarah's kitchen, and the whole street smells of chocolate and smoke. Encarna got up at six to put her stew on, the way her mother did. Since Sunday, too, the two friends have been speaking to each other formally, on purpose. Now there are two pots on the folding table from the residents' meeting, and the whole building is sitting around it with spoons. Manolo is the judge. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
