PART 3 · LESSON 29 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
A Promise Is a Promise
The wedding banquet at a country house outside Seville goes on until dawn - the envelopes, five courses, the cake cut with a sword, the speeches, the waltz, the groom's tie cut up and sold, the bouquet, and a dance Encarna has been waiting for since February. Speak the language of a Spanish wedding party - I'll be brief, I propose a toast to, what happens at the stag night gets told at the wedding, you owe me a dance, stick and all, a promise is a promise, just follow my lead, wish granted, who'll give more.

THE STORY
It's Wednesday, June 20th, 2029, eleven at night, in the courtyard of an old country house outside Seville, under strings of lights and an enormous fig tree. Two hundred guests have eaten five courses, the envelopes are in a wooden box by the door, and the cake has been cut with a sword. In February, on her seventy-eighth birthday, Encarna wished out loud for two things - to make it to eighty, and to dance at Lucia's wedding. Pablo promised her that dance. Tonight the groom is still on his silver walking stick. First, the speeches. After midnight, the dancing, and at one in the morning, Curro comes round with a pair of scissors. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
