PART 3 · LESSON 21 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
You Can't See Them
On Palm Sunday afternoon, the first procession of Holy Week comes down a narrow street in the centre of Seville, and Encarna explains what's happening - who carries the float, who the robed children are, and why a man keeps knocking on it. When the float stops, a bearer comes out for air, and Sarah the nurse asks about his neck. Describe a procession with the impersonal and the passive - it's carried, you can't see them, it's lifted, it can't be explained - and learn the words of Seville's Holy Week.

THE STORY
It's Palm Sunday, April 9th, five in the afternoon, in a narrow street in the centre of Seville. The pavements are packed. Children are holding palm leaves and collecting candle wax in balls. Julian is wearing his new socks and carrying a folding stool for Encarna. A band is playing somewhere behind the corner. Then, very slowly, a float covered in flowers, with a statue of Jesus on a donkey, comes round the corner, swaying, as if it were walking by itself. Ten minutes later it stops right in front of them, and one of the men underneath comes out for air. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
