PART 1 · LESSON 4 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
The Years Don't Go By
Sarah's mom and dad arrive for the summer, as promised, and meet four floors of stairs, the July heat and Encarna again. Speak the language of a family visit - welcome back, the years don't go by, I pay them no attention, what did she say, is this normal, here you live at night, dinner's on me, let's split it, that's cheating - and translate between two families who half understand each other.

THE STORY
It's Friday, July 20th, 2029, seven in the evening, in Pureza Street. Sarah's mom and dad have landed from Boston, by way of Madrid, with two suitcases out of three. It's thirty-seven degrees. The last time they were in Seville was the April Fair, the spring before last, and they last saw Encarna at Christmas, in Oaxaca, after the wedding. Now they're standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at four floors and no lift, and Encarna comes out to meet them. At midnight, at a restaurant by the river, the argument about who pays is settled, and not the way Encarna planned. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
