PART 2 · LESSON 18 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
I Nearly Fell
Tuesday's class is at a midwives' centre, and it's Ivan's turn to deliver a baby. At the last moment he faints, and then he gets up and catches the baby. Say I nearly, you almost, it was close, we nearly didn't make it; say there's no midwife who hasn't fainted once; say how embarrassing, better than ever, my lips are sealed; and help someone back on their feet.

THE STORY
It's Tuesday, January 19th, and today Sarah's class is at a midwives' centre, a house where women come to give birth with midwives. A young mother from the mountains sits on a low wooden birthing stool, an old traditional midwife holds her from behind, and the director has chosen Ivan to catch the baby. Sarah is assisting. Everything is going well. Then the baby's head appears, Ivan goes white, and slides gently to the floor. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
