PART 3 · LESSON 25 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
If We Won
On Wednesday, December 19th, Manolo sells shares in the bar's number for the Christmas lottery, the same number for thirty years, and this year everyone buys one, even Sarah, who never plays. Speak the language of luck and wishful thinking - who wants a share, how much is it, if it comes up, just in case, what if it comes up and I haven't got one, what would you do if we won, I'd carry on, you already do that without the lottery, touch wood, dreaming is free.

THE STORY
It's Wednesday, December 19th, 2029, eight in the evening, in Manolo's bar. On the wall behind the counter, next to Dad's Red Sox cap and the Bilbao football shirt, there's a lottery ticket in a frame - the bar's number, the same one every year for thirty years. It has never won more than the money back. On Saturday, December 22nd, Spain's Christmas lottery is drawn. Manolo comes out from behind the counter with a pad of little paper shares and a pen behind his ear. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
