PART 2 · LESSON 18 OF 30 · 30 MINUTES
Worth the Wait
It's Holy Wednesday, April 17th, on the terrace in Triana. Nerea's parents have come down from Bilbao for Holy Week, and Julian pays the last mole he owes, black mole from his mother's recipe. Nerea's father eats in silence, his eyes watering, and then makes a speech of two sentences. Give a present - I've brought you another smoked cheese - keep a promise - I said by Holy Week and it's Holy Week, this time no problem, I don't owe you anything now - say how hot it is - this is fiendishly hot, this isn't hot at all - blame your tears on the chilli - and say it was worth the wait, in the perfect, the way Spain talks about today.

THE STORY
It's Holy Wednesday, April 17th, 2030, nine at night, on the terrace in Triana. Nerea's parents have come down from Bilbao for Holy Week. Last August, at a cider house in the north, Julian promised them a mole, and tonight he pays, with his mother's recipe and paste he brought back from Oaxaca. Encarna is there, and Nerea's mother has brought her another smoked cheese. Nerea's father eats in silence. Then he speaks. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
