PART 1 · LESSON 3 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
The Night Before
It's the night before the exam, and Rosario's first rule says bed, and no studying. At eleven, Sarah is on the terrace in her dressing gown, with cards in her pocket, and Encarna comes up in her lift with a flask of manzanilla - not the kind Julian hopes for. Reassure someone - you'll see, it'll all turn out fine, stop going round and round it - say you can't sleep, or didn't sleep a wink, let someone else take care of it, and tell Seville's two manzanillas apart.

THE STORY
It's Friday, January 25th, 2030, eleven at night, on the terrace of the top-floor flat. The exam is tomorrow at eight. Rosario's first rule says the night before, no studying, off to bed, and at ten Sarah went to bed. Now Julian wakes up, and her side of the bed is empty. He finds her on the terrace, in her dressing gown, wrapped in a blanket. Ten minutes later, Encarna comes up in her lift. She can't sleep either. At one in the morning, Julian and Encarna are still there, whispering. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
