PART 2 · LESSON 19 OF 30 · 30 MINUTES
One of Us
It's the early hours of Good Friday, in Pureza Street. The Hope of Triana stops under Encarna's balcony, and this year Encarna knows who is underneath. Nerea's parents see their first Holy Week in Seville, and Sarah tries to explain what can't be explained. Explain a tradition - the bearers, the knocker, the relief, you have to live it - put the little word on the end of the verb - how do they know when to lift her, look after them for me - hear an arrow song made for two men, and welcome someone in for good - that place is yours, you're one of us now, as long as your neck holds out.

THE STORY
It's Good Friday, April 19th, 2030, about two in the morning, in Pureza Street in Triana. The Hope of Triana has just come out of her chapel. On her balcony, in her black mantilla, Encarna waits with Sarah, Nerea, and Nerea's parents, down from Bilbao for their first Holy Week in Seville. Last year, Encarna didn't know that Julian was under the float. This year, she does. Sarah tries to explain to the Basques what can't be explained, and when the float stops below the balcony, Encarna sings. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
