PART 2 · LESSON 15 OF 30 · 31 MINUTES

It Was Her

It's Friday, March 22nd, the last day in Oaxaca. At the old convent, the manager brings out the book of births that was found in a wall, and Julian lays photographs of Sister Isabel's signed letters beside it. Sarah reads the entries the way a midwife reads notes, and a line from sixteen ninety-three answers the question at last. Compare and conclude - the handwriting is the same, a midwife wrote this, now we do know, it was her - read an old line aloud - the medicines Dona Leonor sent me arrived - and say you'll tell someone in person.

THE STORY

It's Friday, March 22nd, 2030, ten in the morning, at the old convent of Saint Catherine in Oaxaca, now a hotel. Tomorrow, Sarah, Julian and Encarna fly home. In a quiet room off the cloister, the manager brings out the book of births that was found in a wall, and Julian lays photographs of Sister Isabel's two signed letters to the king beside it. Sarah reads the entries the way a midwife reads notes, and in sixteen ninety-three, Julian finds a line about Leonor's third ship. That night, he doesn't phone Ortega. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
