PART 1 · LESSON 6 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
I Raise My Glass
It's Encarna's seventy-ninth birthday, in her patio by the jasmine Paco gave her. She makes her two wishes out loud, as always. Lucia and Pablo bring a present that doesn't come in a box, and Sarah and Julian bring last year's ticket, with a date at last. Make a toast - I'd like to say a few words, I raise my glass to - say who a baby will be named after, say how long you've known something, and protest with a smile.

THE STORY
It's Monday, February 18th, 2030, nine at night, in Encarna's patio in Triana. Today she turns seventy-nine. There are lights in the orange trees, a chocolate cake with a seven and a nine, and the jasmine Paco gave her fifty-nine years ago. Round the table are Sarah and Julian, Manolo, and Lucia, twenty-two weeks pregnant, with Pablo and his guitar. Encarna makes her wishes out loud, as she always does. Then come the presents, two envelopes, and Sarah makes a toast. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
