PART 3 · LESSON 24 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES

Keep Them, They're Yours

Monday morning at the door of the delivery ward, Sarah's first day as a midwife in Spain. Rosario is at the door as promised, Sarah tries to give back the keys she has carried for two years, and Rosario has brought a notebook like her own. At eleven, a first birth, and one word written down. At night, the second paper goes into the frame with room for two. Hand something on - keep them, they're yours, until you give them to someone else - give advice with a bite - the day they don't shake, worry, write them all down - be welcomed at work - you already know the place, I retired, but nobody threw me out - talk a mother through the last push - yes you can - count what's done and what's left - then you've got five thousand two hundred and eleven to go - and say there's no room left, and all the ones to come.

THE STORY

It's Monday, May 27th, 2030, a quarter to eight in the morning, at the door of the delivery ward of the Virgen Macarena, in Seville. Sarah's first day as a midwife in Spain. Rosario is at the door, as she promised on Saturday, up from Cadiz on the first train, with something in her bag. Sarah has something in her pocket too. At eleven, in room five, a first birth. And at nine that night, in the top-floor flat in Triana, Julian has had a hammer out. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
