Mother and Son, Healthy

Sunday night on the delivery ward of the Macarena. Lucia's waters break on the sofa at eleven, Pablo drives her in and leaves the hospital bag by the front door, and Sarah is on the night shift, with a promise to keep. Lucia, a midwife herself, is a terrible patient, and Pablo holds on. At a quarter to six, Paco. Say what has happened - my waters have broken, I've left it by the door - refuse the usual comfort - don't tell me it's going well, that's what I tell the first-time mothers, you say that to all of them - talk a woman through a birth - tonight you're not a midwife, you're a mother, you're doing really well, don't push yet, I can see the head, meet your son - hold on - I'm here, and I'm not fainting - and give the news in the right order - first Encarna, then your mother, Paco's been born.

THE STORY

It's Sunday, June 16th, 2030, half past eleven at night, at the door of the delivery ward of the Virgen Macarena, in Seville. Sarah is on the night shift. Lucia's waters broke on the sofa at eleven, Pablo drove her in, and the hospital bag he packed in April is still by their front door. In April, Sarah made Lucia a promise, and tonight she keeps it. Lucia, a midwife herself, is a terrible patient. At a quarter to six on Monday morning, Paco is born, and the first phone call goes to Encarna. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
