PART 3 · LESSON 21 OF 30 · 30 MINUTES

The Student Has Surpassed the Teacher

It's the April Fair, in May this year, in Manolo's cousin's tent. Emily dances all four sevillanas better than her sister, Lucia, thirty-four weeks pregnant, dances one and sits down, and at midnight Encarna raises her glass to Nerea, at her last Fair, and to Paco, on his way. Pay a compliment with a sting - that girl dances better than her sister, you don't dance badly either, for someone from Boston - say the student has surpassed the teacher, and answer it - don't let it go to your head - keep a friend to her rule - I'll dance one and sit down, you used to say that to me - raise a glass - to those who are leaving and those on their way, to those who are staying, to the next wedding - and dodge a hint - don't look at me, what do you mean, no?

THE STORY

It's Tuesday, May 7th, 2030, ten at night, at the April Fair, in May this year because Easter was late. In Manolo's cousin's tent, Emily and Curro have just danced all four sevillanas, and Emily now dances better than her sister. Lucia, thirty-four weeks pregnant, in a flamenco dress made for a bump, dances one and sits the rest out. At midnight, Encarna raises her glass to Nerea, at her last Fair before Bilbao, and to Paco, on his way. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
