PART 3 · LESSON 30 OF 30 · 33 MINUTES

Once Upon a Time

The last lesson of the Spanish course. Thursday night on the terrace, a year to the day since the move upstairs. Paco rides up in Encarna's lift for the first time, Julian opens the last of his boxes and finds the notebook from their first day in Seville, and Paco won't sleep, so Encarna has an idea - tell him a story, yours, from the beginning. Sarah tells Paco her own story as a fairy tale, and the people who lived it say their own lines again, from a door in Mexico City to a delivery room in Seville. Mark an anniversary - a year ago today, and with no lift - say it again - and I'll say it again, you should have thought of that before - keep a resolution - I'm opening it tonight, I promised on New Year's Eve - talk about two Spanishes - the words from there and the ones from here, I don't translate any more, not even in my dreams - and tell a tale - there's no way to get him to sleep, tell him a story, yours, nobody here has heard the whole of it, once upon a time there was a girl from Boston who went to a faraway land, with a backpack, a month and not a word of Spanish, it hasn't ended yet.

THE STORY

It's Thursday, July 4th, 2030, ten at night, on the terrace of the top-floor flat in Pureza Street, Triana. A year ago today, Sarah and Julian carried everything they owned up these four floors, with no lift. Tonight the lift stops at the top and Lucia and Pablo step out with Paco, seventeen days old, on his first ride. Mom and Dad are in their last week of the summer, Emily and Curro are here, Manolo comes up when he closes the bar, and Encarna has waited at the lift door since half past nine. Julian has one box of books left to open, the last of a hundred-odd, and a promise he made on New Year's Eve. Paco has been crying since the lift. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
